Alternative Education

Consett YMCA has been developing it’s Alternative Education programme continuously since it was first set up over 9 years ago.

It’s aim is to offer an alternative curriculum programme tailored to suit the needs of today’s young people, helping them to achieve and gain certification in an environment other than that of the classroom.

Starting with just one school during the first year, the programme has steadily grown bigger and currently works with 9 groups from 6 schools throughout the area, with more schools interested in starting, imminently. The Programme is also offered to groups other than schools, we currently work alongside groups such as the Youth Inclusion Programme (see below).

So far we’ve had well over 200 participants on the alternative education programme, all of whom have gained something from their time with us.

Whilst on the Programme the young people will partake in over 30 exciting yet educational activities, some of which include, kayaking, climbing, canoeing, night -lining, gorge walking, courses on manual handling and first aid, and educational visits including Beamish Museum, the Durham Light Infantry Museum and the Centre For Life, plus many, many more.

Participants on the programme have the opportunity to gain many impressive certificates throughout, including: ASDAN and Prison me no way, both GCSE equivalents, A Bronze youth achievement award and also Canoeing and kayaking 1,2 and 3 star awards as well as others.

The alternative Education programme has already benefited the lives of many young people. One such person was a young male, who’s wish in life was to join the army, unfortunately he was rejected because of his lack of academic qualifications.

However, through the Alternative education programme, he built up an impressive portfolio from the activities he participated in, which when shown to the army, allowed him to join and fulfil his ambition.

The alternative Education programme has already worked wonders for many people, now let it work for you!!!

Prince's Trust
The Princes Trust Team Challenge is a twelve-week personal development programme for young people ages 16 - 25 years. The Course involves young people from all areas of local community, including employed and unemployed.

Throughout the 12 weeks, participants work towards nationally recognized qualifications such as City & Guilds, Profile of Achievement and Key skills such as working with others, improving own learning and performance and problem solving.

These Key Skills are recognized qualifications and are most sought after by employees.

During these 12 weeks, the team will participate in many activities, both outdoor and indoor, such as problem solving, orienteering, kayaking and many others, including a 1 week residential here at Consett YMCA. Also during this 12 week programme the group will organise and run two Community projects where they will raise money in the community for the community, promoting team work and organisational skills.

Youth Inclusion Programme

Consett YMCA is part of the partnership that runs the local division of the Youth Inclusion Programme (YIP).

Youth Inclusion Programmes were established in 2000 and are tailor-made programmes for 13 to 16-year-olds who are engaged in crime or are identified as being most at risk of offending, truancy, or social exclusion.

YIPs target young people in an area who are considered to be most at risk of offending, but are also open to other young people in the local area. The programme operates in 72 districts in England and Wales.

The aim YIP is to reduce youth crime in neighbourhoods. Young people on the programme are identified through a number of different agencies who work together. These include the Youth Offending Team (YOT), police, social services, local education authorities or schools, other local agencies and the community.

The programme gives young people somewhere safe to go where they can learn new skills, take part in activities with others and get help with their education and careers guidance. Positive role models – the workers and volunteer mentors – help to change young people's attitudes to education and crime.
